January 2025
How did January of a whole new year come to a close so quickly? Spinning me around to discover I haven’t written a blog at the start of the year since 2022?!

The planet orbits the same but with glorious sunrises and sunsets marking this month as a winter with a bright glow. Here I am keeping my promise to create something new, to enhance or learn a new skill, to be on the lookout for a new exhibit, a different experience, a challenge to face and overcome.
February is heart month, a time I am aware of being connected to Valentine’s Day, family birthdays, passings, and health awareness: Grandmother, mother and niece mark the calendar of celebration!
I carve hearts with wings and this year a basswood carving I had a dream about – to create a “Chamber of The Heart." The dream faded with its image but I was able to resurrect it into a pine shadow box, complete with metal trappings to reflect my love of steampunk… perhaps someone will feel the LOVE.
Other projects include a request from Place Des Arts for my Mariner Boathouse "capture" which I have carved from cottonwood bark(my favourite, most forgiving wood-medium) and outlined with pyrography. I love making a stream of smoke and remnant of char! Images to come…
And to Earth wanderers there is always a place somewhere on the globe that inspires me – this year I discovered captivating photos of Iceland.
In keeping with barren, isolated landscapes, rocky crags, and stone stacks of rugged coastlines... I am capturing yet another Beacon lighthouse. It is inaccessible from land or sea, called 'Thridrangaviti,' on the tallest of three sea stacks known as 'Storidrangur' built by a mountaineer in 1942, it is situated 30 meters above the ocean - incredible! See for yourself...

Also on my list is 'The Old Man of Stoer' in Scotland, a 60-meter high sea stack. My initial approach began with carving the trees atop Sea Stacks on Vancouver Island’s Cape Scott. They are magical and mystical and my carvings reside somewhere wonderful with an appreciative collector.
I also have a major project in progress to finish by May that I will share at a later date, a surprise creation for a friend… the most I can reveal is that it’s a familiar character in relief. If I have tweaked your curiosity, watch for it in the coming months.
Between sharing and concealing, I hope to inspire others to seek and find.
The best news for 2025, I am pleased to be adding a very important Certificate of Authenticity to my carvings going forward. Designed by my son, Damian Canta; all my commissions, clients, and customers at Blackberry Gift Shop, Place Des Arts, local Art Exhibits, or buying from me directly, will receive this valuable record, including how to properly care for the piece and how to contact me in the event of repair.

A final note to my fans, followers, and viewers: next month I will be featured in The Artist's Journal, a listing of Calls for Entry and art competitions throughout British Columbia, helping connect artists and organizations across the province. If you have any interest, or if the organization can benefit you in any way, I recommend keeping up with their regular publication... it's FREE!
As always, thanks so much for your support and happy carving!
